How stamp duty works in NSW
NSW charges transfer duty on a sliding scale that rises from 1.25% to 5.5% of the price, with a premium rate of 7% on very expensive homes. The thresholds are indexed to inflation each 1 July. Owner-occupiers and investors pay the same rates. Foreign buyers pay an extra 9% surcharge on residential property, on top of normal duty.
First home buyers in NSW
Under the First Home Buyers Assistance Scheme, eligible first home buyers pay no duty on a new or established home up to $800,000. Between $800,000 and $1 million there is a sliding concession, and above $1 million full duty applies.
